WHAT'S THAT NOISE?

Have you ever had a full noise survey to check that sound levels do not exceed the legal limits?

The Noise at Work Regulations 1989 principally requires that employers prevent damage to the hearing of their employees from exposure to excessive noise in the workplace.

Regulation 4 of this legislation states “every employer shall, when any of his employees is likely to be exposed to the first action level or above, ensure that a competent person makes a noise assessment which is adequate……” In the scope of these regulations, a competent person is defined as one who is capable of measuring noise and presenting sufficient information to the employer to enable him to make the correct decisions to enable him to comply with the law.

The “first action level” referred to in the legislation is the noise level at which an employer must take action to protect his employees A new European Directive will come into force as UK Regulations in April 2006, which will define lower action levels. These will result in more workplaces coming under the scope of the legislation on noise.

If you have not had a noise survey carried out on your premises recently, it is essential that you make arrangements for this to be done as you could be failing to comply with the law without realising it.
